Adult Day Services
Adult Day Services programs offer a safe, positive, caring alternative to nursing home care for those who do not need 24-hour skilled nursing. These programs are designed to help people stay mentally and physically active, reduce isolation, improve their health, and prevent decline of their abilities. Adult Day Care Services may be named differently in various states. Examples include Adult Day Care, Adult Foster Care, Adult Day Services, Adult Day Health Care, Senior Day Care, Community Based Adult Service Centers, etc.
Adult Day Service Frequency and Hours
People typically attend a center in their community two to five times a week, based on their individual need. All programs either provide or can assist with transportation arrangements. Program hours typically range from four to eight hours per day; however, some centers offer extended hours to accommodate working caregivers. Many centers also provide caregiver support groups and training.
Services vary from center to center but may include therapeutic activities such as art, singing, age-appropriate games, health monitoring, medication administration, social work, meals, dietary counseling, physical, occupational and speech therapy.
Some programs focus on a specific population — for example those who share a similar cultural or ethnic background or younger adults with head injuries or developmental disabilities. Families also receive help with information and referral to other services, as needed.
Adult Day Services in California
In the state of California (CA), Adult Day Services fall into two buckets: (1) Adult Day Program (ADP), and (2) Adult Day Health Care (ADHC). As the terminology implies, the latter program is health centered and may include skilled nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, medication administration by RN, etc. And hence may be eligible for Medi-cal (i.e.Medicaid in California) payments.
Both ADPs and ADHCs may serve persons with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias, complex physical, mental or developmental disabilities, cognitive impairments or other chronic disabling conditions. While providing person-centered individualized care, adult day services provide needed support for working caregivers, allowing them to maintain jobs and reducing the stress and burn out that often accompanies the responsibility of 24/7 care.
Generally, Adult Day Program (ADP) is private pay based and not eligible for Medicaid / Medical payments. However, Area Agencies on Aging, Regional Centers and Community donations may supplement the fees. Check with the adult day care center of your choice for eligibility.
For Medical eligibility, Adult Day Health Centers must also be recognized as Community Based Adult Services (CBAS) center by the state.
All adult day centers have to licensed by the State. While the Adult Day Program is administered by the Department of Social Services, Adult Day Health Program is administered by the Department of Aging in California.
